Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
1 / So how do we get started?
The best way to start is to see if we might be a good fit via a 15 minute (free) consultation. It's part vibe check, part "meeting of the minds," and part ice-breaking. If it looks like we are going to move forward, I'll then send some intake paperwork via my SimplePractice client portal.
2 / Paperwork?
Yep! But you won't be doing much paperwork after getting set up. Included in this batch of papers are questionnaires about your current mental health, consent forms, and agreements about keeping your information private. It's all relevant and important to make sure we do things right.
3 / What is the first session like?
Having anxiety about a first session is normal, so let's try to manage that by setting some expectations. Our primary goal in the first session is to establish trust with each other and the right amount of comfort with the setting and task ahead. To that end, we'll talk about some of the logistics off the top (length and frequency of sessions, payment, and privacy).

I'll introduce myself and some of my approaches to therapy, and we'll review the paperwork you've completed.

We'll make adjustments to the setting -- do you want to adjust the angle of the chairs? Too much light, or too little? Do you want something to fidget with? Let's address it.
Then the big questions: Why are you here? And maybe the bigger question, "Who are you?" The answers to those questions can and will change, and will guide our path forward.

If this all seems overwhelming, just think about the first step. Get the 15 minute consultation and we can go from there.
4 / Do you do virtual sessions? In-person sessions?
I currently offer both virtual and in-person sessions.
Virtual sessions are done via a HIPAA-compliant platform. We can do this as long as you're physically located in North Carolina.

My office is in Chapel Hill, NC, and shares waiting room space with the Chapel Hill Massage Collective. It's a comfortable and warm space, and there's tea. The waiting room and my office have seating that will accommodate folks of all shapes.
Payment
1 / Do you accept insurance?
I am currently in-network and credentialed with Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield NC. For other insurance companies, I am considered "out of network."
2 / What if you are out of network but I still want to see you for therapy?
You can opt to pay "out of pocket," also called "self pay." I can also offer you a "superbill" which you can submit to your insurance for potential full or partial reimbursement, but I suggest you check with your insurance company for reimbursement rates for out-of-network therapy services first.
3 / Do you offer a sliding scale payment structure?
I reserve a limited number of sliding scale openings in my caseload for those without insurance and will have trouble paying for normal rates. Please reach out to ask about the availability of a sliding scale opening.
